The job of the artist is to deepen the mystery. -Francis Bacon
Unlike painting, drawing or sculpture, or in fact any other art medium, photography allows you to take what really should be a finished piece of art and take it a step beyond that which you created in the studio or out in the field. Sometimes all that's needed is a slight tweaking of color to make an otherwise bland photograph pop. But more often than not, snapping the shutter is just the first step in a long and laborious process with the end result being something altogether different than what another person may see in the viewfinder.
The viewfinder gives the photographer a glimpse of what's to come. It's rarely what I see in my mind's eye. It's simply the first step. What you see here runs a wide gamut and it's plain to all who see it that my imagination doesn't sit still for very long.
The little boy on the dark stairway was shot in almost complete darkness, save one small kerosene lamp. The five-year-old knew it was goign to be dark in my 130 year old basement but he was game to try. That's me behind the stairs wearing the goalie mask and reaching out. When he saw his photo, with absolutely no post production done to it, he said, "That was really scary, but that's a really cool picture." I couldn't ask for a better compliment than that.
I try not to scare all of my models. Usually we can put the scary stuff in afterward, such as the photo of Brooke running up the stairs with the red-eyed monster behind her. There was nothing at all scary about that shot: You'd never know that it was taken in a park in broad daylight with 4 or 5 other people less that twenty feet away from her!
The photos here do not have to be scary. Jenna and her dog, Kylie posed for their photo in a park and Faith, who looks like she just shot her abuser, actually posed in front of a white screen and was placed in the kitchen afterwards. I won't give away all of my secrets because I want you to take part in them. If you have an idea for a photo that you'd like to be in, or if you want something completely 'different' but don't really know what it is, get in touch with me and we'll see what we can come up with.
Remember too, I have some ideas written in a notebook that I want to try. I'm just waiting for the rigth victims... I mean models, to show up and shoot them!!
If you think you'd like to take part in something completely different, send me an email or give me a call and we'll see if we can work something out. I'll often take a photo that you want, if you'll do something that I want for my website.
If you have any questions, I'm just a mouse click away so don't hestitate to shoot me a note.
